June 2018 Grants Announcement

• $2 million as a challenge grant for the Detroit Zoo to create a new Great Lakes center in Macomb County. The center will use sustainable design and innovative programming to build visitors’ Great Lakes stewardship.

• $1.9 million for 10 green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) grants in Detroit and southeast Michigan, advancing water quality and community development goals. Among the funded projects is a mixed-income housing development in Detroit that will model how installing GSI can both beautify a neighborhood and earn savings that offset the cost of affordable units.

• $1.8 million for four grants supporting broader Great Lakes issues, including an effort by Michigan State University to prevent phosphorous from leaving farm fields. Phosphorous from farms is a leading cause of algal blooms in the western basin of Lake Erie.

• $50,000 supporting two Great Lakes conferences in Detroit this fall. The Healing Our Waters conference is a keystone event for regional Great Lakes advocates, and it will be coordinated with the annual meeting of the Great Lakes Funders Collaboration.

• $100,000 towards a collaboratively-funded venture to ameliorate Detroit’s continuing tax foreclosure crisis, reaching over 10,000 homeowners. While the number of residential tax foreclosures in Detroit is declining, it remains a significant issue that destabilizes families and neighborhoods.

• $3.7 million in 17 additional grants continuing long-term support for leading organizations in environmental health, sustainable urban food policy, and jazz education.
