June 2019 Grants
We are pleased to share the news of $3.8 million in new and continuing grants approved at our June board meeting.
Six grants totaling nearly $500,000 will continue Detroit’s strong jazz tradition by educating the next generation of jazz musicians. The funding will:
- Continue intensive jazz education programming at the Carr Center, Detroit Jazz Festival,Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and MSU Community Music School: Detroit.
- Create a jazz education consortium that will increase student participation in jazz education programs throughout the region.
- Add an educational component to the Jazz from Detroit salon series.
- Send ten local band directors to Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Band Director Academy in New York.
Over $900,000 in grants will support further development of green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) in Detroit and throughout the region. The grants support planning for GSI at cultural and community development institutions, as well as along proposed bike lanes and greenways throughout the city.
Six grants totaling $1.2 million will support broader Great Lakes issues including administration of the State of Michigan’s wetlands program; exploration of creative financing models to help meet the State’s $800 million infrastructure gap; scientific research and modeling; dynamic communication; and binational collaboration.
