ALZHEIMER’S RESEARCH & SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES “The anaerobic digester represents a significant step on our green journey; One of our goals is to inspire others to join us as we continuously look for ways to reduce our ecological footprint.” — Ron Kagan, Detroit Zoo Alzheimer’s Research & Special Opportunities Progress Highlights Progressing on its ambitious Greenprint for sustainability, the Detroit Zoo became the first zoo in the country to build and operate an anaerobic biodigester. The biodigester converts animal manure and food waste into compost for gardens, while creating an estimated 470,000 kilowatts of elec- tricity per year, reducing the zoo’s carbon footprint, and cutting energy costs by approximately $70,000 per year. The zoo also installed reusable water refilling stations and ended plastic water bottle sales, allowing 1.3 million metro Detroiters to #ditchthebottle at the Detroit Zoo and Belle Isle Nature Center. We envision a world free of Alzheimer’s disease, and support leading research on the prevention, management, and treatment of the disease. From time to time, the Foundation also initiates support for exceptional oppor- tunities that fall outside of its mission. 23
