ENVIRONMENT 5 Great Lakes Progress Highlights Reducing agricultural runoff through sustainable farming practices After participating in a series of peer-led workshops, 68 farmers across Southeast Michigan, representing 15% of the farmland in Michigan’s portion of the Western Lake Erie watershed, committed to practices that would prevent pollutants such as phospho- rous and nitrogen from running off into the lake. Each farmer learned how to improve crop yields and soil health while reducing the pollutants that fuel toxic algal blooms, and will now share those practices with his or her peers. We envision a thriving Great Lakes ecosystem, especially the watersheds impacting Metro Detroit and Bayfield, Ontario. We support efforts to eliminate polluted runoff and other threats by promoting green stormwater infrastructure, individual and institutional stewardship, binational cooperation, and science-based policy.
